BOLIVIA
We have been working with our Friend and in-country agent Jenaro Yupanqui at Elma tours since 2013.
He has worked closely with local native communities to seek what is best for their development and growth as a community
Lake Titicaca-Nachoco
Nachoca, on the shores of Lake Titicaca, is 2 hours from La Paz in Bolivia, and has a population of 2000. It has beautiful views over lake Titicaca (3,800m) and onto the Cordilla Real. The school has 85 students, 4-12 yrs old, at Central Nachoca, and 155 students aged 12-18yrs old, at Juan Jose Torrez, some of whom have to walk up to 2 hours one way to school! The students come from many surrounding villages on the shores of lake Titicaca and beyond.
Global Footprints liased and worked closely with head professor Juan Quispe, who asked us if we could build an extra classroom to accommodate the increase in students. We dcarried out this task with 2 teams from a school in Nottingham, who got involved with everything. This included concreting the foundations, laying bricks; to installing the roof timbers for a new classroom to be constructed overlooking the highest navigable lake in the world!!
The students worked tirelessly and with their hard-earned donations and with the donations from Global Footprints made the dream of the new classroom come to fruition
Illimani- Pinaya Village
The village of Pinaya on the slopes of Illimani, is where Global Footprints built a church for the locals to use. Two teams, over a 10-day period helped the local community build from the foundations to the roof. The villagers welcomed the students from a school inNottingham, holding a festival, and accommodating them in the local school. Most of the materials had to be brought to the village from La Paz, over 3 hours by mountainous roads.
Building work was made harder by the fact Pinaya is above 4000m altitude, combined with hot sun in the day and cold at night. The teams did a sterling job, with the locals being very grateful. Global Footprints and the students have really left a lasting legacy for the local community to enjoy for generations to come.
