BORNEO
KUDAT Turtle Conservation Society
Helping The people of Bavang Jamal increase Tourism, Restore fishing back to the locals and help conserve the turtles and local wildlife.
The village is a 5-minute walk from a white sandy beach where turtles once laid their eggs. Behind the beach is a mangrove, which has been cut off from the sea by a sand bar, after a storm 3 years ago. The mangrove is the breeding ground for fish, which is declining, due to it being cut off from fresh sea water.
This has had a detrimental effect on the local wildlife and fishermen.
The mangrove relies on fresh sea water at high tide from the adjoining sea and was connected by a small inlet at the end of the beach, which is now blocked. The task is to create a permanent channel to allow for this flow of water. This will be done by digging out a channel in the sand and supporting the sides with rock gabions. Also re-establishing mangroves in the area.
