Climate Action Plan

CLIMATE ACTION PLAN

At Global Footprints, we wholeheartedly embrace the principles outlined in the Glasgow Declaration through our commitment to the five shared pathways.

Education: We believe that travel offers young people a unique opportunity to witness different communities' ways of life, fostering awareness and promoting sustainable practices upon their return to the UK. We actively engage in knowledge exchange with our hosts, helping them develop a deeper understanding of environmental importance and sustainability.

Measurement: To minimize our carbon footprint, we offset all our flight emissions using the Civil Aviation carbon calculator. By planting trees in collaboration with our key project, Kilimanjaro Young Girls in Need, we support the local community in Moshi, Tanzania. Additionally, we carefully consider all in-country travel and activities, ensuring we minimize carbon emissions. By sleeping onsite at project sites, we reduce unnecessary travel arrangements.

All our flights are 100% carbon offset with 25% being offset by Climate impact and 75% being offset on Global Footprints Worldwide projects

We calculate carbon offsetting at £12.50 per tCO2e

Re-generation: Our in-country projects prioritize community-led regeneration. We support local livelihoods by providing employment opportunities, sourcing food and materials from the communities, and utilizing locally owned accommodations. In Moshi, we take immense pride in our partnership with KYGN, where we transformed a derelict piece of land into a school that educates and houses orphans, providing them with a safe learning environment.

Reduction: We actively reduce our environmental impact by minimizing face-to-face meetings and opting for online interactions whenever possible. We offer pre-expedition training near schools to reduce transportation needs. Coach travel is also encouraged for our expeditions in Europe. Moreover, we promote the reduction of plastic consumption by avoiding single-use plastics and employing water purification systems during our trips. We proudly support "TAP" (Travellers Against Plastic) as partners.

Accountability: Transparency is paramount to us, and we openly demonstrate how funds are allocated to support various projects. Our contributions have included the construction of additional classrooms in a Bolivian school, the re-establishment of a mangrove swamp in Borneo, and the building of a school and a reforestation project in Tanzania. We have also funded a water tank in Tanzania to collect rainfall naturally, improving sanitation at schools.

Tourism Declares Climate Emergency

We declare our shared commitment to unite all stakeholders in transforming tourism to deliver effective climate action.

We support the global commitment to halve emissions by 2030 and reach Net Zero as soon as possible before 2050.

We will consistently align our actions with the latest scientific recommendations, so as to ensure our approach remains consistent with a rise of no more than 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels by 2100.

As a signatory, we commit to:

  1. Deliver a climate action plan within 12 months of signing.
  2. Report publicly both progress against interim and long-term targets, as well as the actions being taken, at least annually.
  3. Align our plan with five shared pathways (measure, decarbonise, regenerate, collaborate, finance) to ensure climate action is consistent across all of tourism.
  4. Share information on activities connected to Tourism Declares and/or the Glasgow Declaration among contacts and networks.
  5. Work in a collaborative and constructive spirit with other members of Tourism Declares and/or signatories of the Glasgow Declaration.
